How to Wear Your Judo or Jiu Jitsu Gi

Grappling is awesome and it may be intimidating at the start but I promise there are only a few simple things to get out of the way before you feel at home. The first of which is putting on your uniform (also known as a gi).

What should we have?

Main parts of a gi

There are three parts to a judo or jiu jitsu uniform:

  • gi top (sometimes called a jacket or kimono)
  • gi pants (with a drawstring and loops)
  • a belt (everyone starts with a white belt)

Why are there different color gis?

In judo, you have a white gi and a blue gi to distinguish one side from the other. So think of it as a home team or an away team. The color of your gi doesn't distinguish you, as far as rank. Students typically start off first with a white uniform in judo and a white belt as well.

What should I wear under my gi?

  • rashguard (poly-spandex top) or shirt
  • shorts or tights
  • knee pads

What you wear underneath your judo or BJJ gi is up to you. The main thing to consider is comfort. You can wear training shorts or leggings as well as your favorite athletic t-shirt.

You can also wear what's called a rashguard. Rashguards are polyester-spandex tops, similar to what kids wear to prevent sunburns when they swim. These are sweat wicking, so what we typically recommend is wearing a rash guard top especially in hot temperatures or if you're training frequently. Four or five times a week is when I would consider investing in a rashguard.

They help preventing (obviously) rashes underneath your arms and also it is a barrier between your skin and the mats so it prevents cuts and is a little more hygienic.
